The Respiratory Department has an excellent foundation for delivering high quality research, most notably with industry sponsored Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs), across the large cohort of respiratory patients within Doncaster.

The team provides care for respiratory patients with a range of conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, lung cancer, fibrotic lung diseases, tuberculosis and other respiratory infections, occupational respiratory diseases and also sleep-disordered breathing such as obstructive sleep apnoea.

Several respiratory physicians actively lead research across the above-listed areas and have an expressed interest in continuing such activity, ensuring patients have the opportunity to participate in studies relevant to their condition.

The Department actively engage with relevant Research Networks including the Primary Care Research Network - East Midlands and South Yorkshire Hub. There is active representation at regional Respiratory Local Speciality Group meetings, to ensure all feasible research opportunities are considered and to ensure adequate support provision is given to all ongoing research.


The Respiratory team continue to host a number of clinical trials with full support from the Cardio-Respiratory team, who provide a wide range of diagnostic services for research patients, including the following:

  • Electrocardiography
  • 24 Hour ECG and blood pressure monitoring
  • Exercise Testing
  • Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic
  • Echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound)
  • Pacemaker implantation and follow-up
  • Coronary Angiogram
  • Lung function assessment
  • Sleep Apnoea investigation and CPAP follow-up.
  • Tilt testing
